There are various definitions of obesity. In general, if a person's bodyweight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. In other words, a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 to 30 is considered overweight, while any BMI of over 30 is considered obese.
Obesity results from a complex interaction of genetic, behavioral and environmental factors and is often out of one’s direct control.
What are the Health Implications of Obesity?
There are many health risks for obese persons. Some direct risks are as follows:
- Coronary heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
- Stroke
- Liver and Gallbladder disease
- Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
- Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
- Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)
Additionally, where you carry the excess weight is important as well. For example, obese people with excess fat in the abdomen have a reportedly higher chance of coronary heart disease.
Can Obesity be cured naturally?
Sometimes, a dent can be done using natural cures. Primary methods are Changed Diet and Increased Exercise. If Diet and Exercise are not enough, procedures like Lap Band or Sleeve Gastrectomy can be considered as a viable cure for obesity.
What is Body Mass Index?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person's weight and height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of ovesity for most people. BMI is computed by the formula weight / [height (in inches)]2 x 703. Your weight should be expressed in pounds divided by your height in inches squared by the same and multiplied by 703. It is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
