Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Is a form of bariatric surgery that uses a combination of restriction and malabsorption to achieve optimal weight loss results. In this procedure surgeons create a small pouch at the top of the stomach. This new smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum). Studies have shown that Gastric bypass resolved Type 2 diabetes in 83.8% of patients and often the disease was resolved within days of surgery. It also showed that high blood pressure was resolved in 75% of the patients and 95% showed improvement in their cholesterol levels.

Please note gastric bypass remains the gold standard weight loss surgery. We have had many patients with morbid obesity and diabetes who have undergone gastric bypass and within one week their diabetes has resolved. Gastric bypass is being performed as a metabolic surgery to cure diabetes on patients who are not obese outside of United States. Gastric bypass causes a faster weight loss compared to other surgeries. The weight loss in the first year is very impressive. Below are some of the advantages of gastric bypass.
Advantages
- Limits the amount of food that can be eaten at a meat and reduces the desire to eat.
- Average excess weight loss is generally higher than with gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy.
- No postoperative adjustments are required.
- Shown to help resolve type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obstructive sleep apnea, and to help improve high cholesterol.
- In a study of 608 gastric bypass patients, 553 maintained contact for 14 years; the study reported that significant weight loss was maintained at 14 years.
